Fifteen emerging scholars and practitioners from different parts of the Philippines were selected for the Next Generation One Health Philippines (NGOHP) Fellowship. NGOHP is a project under the Planetary and Global Health Program of the St. Luke’s Medical Center – College of Medicine and is funded by the International Alliance against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade, a newly launched network led by the German Government through GIZ. The project aims to enhance the domestic capacity of the Philippines for One Health transdisciplinary research and knowledge translation to effectively tackle wildlife trade and biodiversity loss as drivers of infectious disease emergence, with the purpose of preventing future zoonotic spillovers in the next 50 years.

The fellows were selected based on their previous and emerging work on One Health issues and potential for future One Health leadership – while also ensuring diverse representation across varied professional, educational, and geographical backgrounds. The chosen fellows come from a wide range of natural, physical, social, and health sciences fields such as: biology, environmental science, agriculture, wildlife studies, economics, psychology, anthropology, law, medicine and public health. 

2022 Next Generation One Health Philippines Fellows

The 15 Next Generation One Health Philippines Fellows: 

• Jackielyn Abela (Palawan) – Jackie earned her BA Social Science (Social Anthropology) degree at the University of the Philippines Baguio and is currently an MA Anthropology candidate at the Ateneo de Manila University.
• Madeiline Aloria (Metro Manila) – Madeiline earned her BS in Business Economics degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman and is a Master in Development Economics candidate at the same university.
• Emmanuelle Angeles (Iloilo City) – Emmanuelle finished his Doctor of Medicine degree at the West Visayas State University, Iloilo City and finished his Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
• Jay Mark Balbosa (Zamboanga del Norte) – Atty. Jay Mark earned his Juris Doctor degree from Andres Bonifacio College, Dipolog City and his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the Mindanao State University-Buug Campus, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay.
• Al John Cabanas (Laguna) – Al John received his Master of Science in Wildlife Studies minor in Animal Science from the University of the Philippines Los Baños.
• Jamaica Ann Caras (Pangasinan) – Jamaica earned her Master’s degree in Environmental Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman and her Bachelor’s degree in Biology major in Microbiology at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.
• Jose Emmanuel De Luna (Laguna) – Jose obtained his MS degree in Entomology (Insecticide Toxicology) and BS degree in Agriculture (Entomology) from the University of Philippines Los Baños.
• Von Carlo Dela Torre (Davao) – Von earned his Master of Science in Biology degree from the Mindanao State University – lligan Institute of Technology
• Jabez Joshua Flores (Laguna) – Jabez is an Environmental and GIS Specialist with a doctorate degree in Environmental Science from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. He has also taken intensive landscape ecology courses at the International Association for Landscape Ecology in Italy.
• Carah Lyn Lo (Cavite) – Dr. Carah obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Studies (Minor in Veterinary Medicine) from the University of the Philippines Los Baños
• Carlo Lumangaya (Metro Manila) – Carlo finished his Bachelor’s degree in Public Health at the University of the Philippines Manila.
• Sheina Macy Manalo (Laguna) – Sheina is a licensed veterinarian from Los Baños, Laguna. She finished her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of the Philippines Los Baños and accomplished her specialization in conservation medicine at the Department of Pathology and Parasitology, University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Brno, Czech Republic. Recently, she completed her Masters in Zoonoses and One Health at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain.
• Jayvee Moltio (Baguio City) – Jayvee earned his Master’s degree in Public Health and Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the Saint Louis University, Baguio. Currently, he is taking his Ph.D. in Indigenous Studies at UP Baguio focusing on Indigenous Health and Spirituality.
• Ryan John Pascual (Cavite) – Ryan received his MSc Aquaculture degree from Ghent University as a VLIR-UOS scholar and is also finishing his second master’s degree in Sustainable Leadership and Governance at the De La Salle University, Dasmariñas.
• Bai Syrah Laila Yazen Sangid (Davao City) – Laila is a registered Psychologist and Psychometrician who both earned her Master’s in Clinical Psychology and BA in Psychology degree at the Ateneo De Davao University. 

The fellows were officially welcomed during an online orientation conducted last October 8, 2022. Together, they are participating in a year-long fellowship that begins with an online introductory course, followed by a workshop in collaborative research, leadership, advocacy, and communications. Supported by mentors and small grants, fellows will conduct transdisciplinary research on issues surrounding wildlife trade and zoonotic spillover prevention. To ensure immediate dissemination and translation of findings, fellows will participate in One Health dialogues with relevant stakeholders.
